Bard of Blood Series Review:

Based on Bilal Siddiqi’s spy thriller, the show entails a story of Kabir Anand (Emraan Hashmi), an ex-IIW agent who left the service after dooming the Balochistan mission and is now suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). He starts a new life and works as an English teacher in Mumbai but his past comes calling. He is drawn back to the field for the rescue mission of his former fellow agents who are now the Taliban’s hostages.

Along with Kabir aka Adonis (his name as an agent), analyst Isha Khanna (Sobhita Dhulipala) also heads to Quetta, the provincial capital of Balochistan. Being a desk agent, she is finally given a chance to prove her capability on the field. The duo teams up with Veer Singh (Vineet Kumar Singh), an undercover agent desperate to return home. They hatch a plan to rescue the hostages and eliminate Taliban leaders. With so much on the plate, will Kabir and the team be able to save all the four agents or will the mission go awry?

Director Ribhu Dasgupta's series tries to showcase multiple threads but it becomes messier with each episode. The script is weak and there is no turning point in the series to elevate it to a higher level. Many dialogues are in Pashto but understanding them isn’t the problem, the issue is with the straightforward storytelling, which never surprises you and leaves you wanting for some stir up.

The seven episodes of ‘Bard of Blood’ follow a series of directionless high-octane action sequences that seem not-so-linked to the plot. Moreover, they are shot in a way that most of the time they look unbelievable. For example, there’s the cliched Bollywood phenomenon of every enemy bullet missing the hero.

In the first couple of episodes, the story hardly moves forward with the trio (Kabir, Isha and Veer) and the screenplay conveys no sense of urgency; the three seem to be running all over the deserts of Balochistan. Subsequent episodes, however, add more characters and elements to the story. Teenage leader Nusrat Marri (Abhishekh Khan) of Balochistan Armed Forces and his elder sister Jannat Marri (Kirti Kulhari Sehgal) dream of an independent state. With new characters, the story gains momentum and becomes reasonably watchable.

The supporting cast performed well but everything in ‘Bard of Blood’ revolves around Emraan Hashmi’s Kabir. He is impressive as a spy but carries a straight face throughout. After him, it’s Sobhita Dhulipala’s character that leaves the strongest impression. Tanveer Shehzad (Jaideep Ahlawat) of Inter Services Agency (ISA), a Taliban handler, could be the perfect antagonist to Hashmi’s hero but his characterisation is weak. Vineet Kumar Singh doesn’t get a chance to show his skills and his Punjabi accent is a total misfit. It is disappointing to see such promising actors being wasted. -
